note: if loose-fill insulation is installed in thick layers, the insulation can compress under its own weight, which reduces the thermal resistance of the insulation and makes it more conductive to heat flow. Similarly,
Insulation and weather sealing materials typically work to slow conductive and convective heat flow, so that the warm air released by your furnace stays where you want it – in your home! The R-value of a material is a measure of its resistance to conductive heat flow, or it’s thermal resistance. Materials with higher R-values are more effective insulators.
If you want to make an investment in your house — and insulation and a new furnace are on the list — it makes the most sense to upgrade your insulation and seal any air leaks BEFORE you upgrade your furnace.
If you see that the snow on your roof is melting before the snow on your neighbor’s, you might have heat leaking through your roof. If you don’t have any or enough attic insulation, the snow on your roof will melt quickly and evenly.
