Is Your Home Under-Insulated?

In 2015, the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association estimated that approximately 90 percent of existing single family detached homes in the U.S. are under-insulated compared to the minimum wall and ceiling insulation R-values recommended by the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code. If your home was built before 1980, it is probably under-insulated, and if it was built prior to 1940, it may not have any insulation at all. Even homes built after 1980 may not have the amount of insulation that is recommended by modern building standards.

Although homeowners are likely to consider replacing old windows and doors when they renovate a home, insulation quality and quantity also has a significant impact on home energy use and comfort. Air sealing and insulating attic spaces, crawl spaces, basements, and around heating/cooling ducts and water pipes is the best way to improve the comfort and efficiency of a historic home. We pay particular attention to ensuring that appropriate air sealing, moisture protection, and ventilation exists when we insulate older homes.

To determine whether your home is under-insulated, check out the Energy Star program’s “Rule Your Attic!” website. The website demonstrates how to measure your attic insulation and take steps to fix the problem if you find that your insulation levels are low. You will also learn how to seal air leaks around electrical, plumbing, and light fixtures.
